Airdrie
United u17s continued their fine run of form on Sunday by coming
back from two goals down to beat Stenhousemuir at St Margarets
Sports complex, Airdrie. Playing on a hard artificial surface
the early part of the first half saw Airdrie under a bit of pressure
despite two good chances to score. The first, after five minutes
of play, was from a free kick taken by Sean Clark from the half-way
line which fell to Mark Fitzpatrick, whose shot was saved by the
goalkeeper. Graeme Fox also came close after he connected with
a crossed ball from Colin Burns which was cleared by the goalkeeper.
Stenhousemuir battled hard and were rewarded with two goals, one
in the thirteenth minute and the second nine minutes later but
Airdrie fought back and goals from Martin McAleese and Mark Fitzpatrick
put Airdrie back on level terms at half time. The second half
saw both teams working hard to break the deadlock and both goalkeepers
were kept busy. A free kick to Stenhousemuir was well saved by
William Morrison and at the other end a pass from substitute John
McLenaghan gave Mark Fitzpatrick a chance that was saved by the
Stenhousemuir goalkeeper. The game looked to be heading for a
draw when, in the eighty-sixth minute ,Airdrie were awarded a
penalty. Mark Fitzpatrick gave the goalkeeper no chance and secured
all three points for Airdrie with the final score 3-2, ensuring
that Airdrie stay at the top of the S.F.L. Under 17 Youth League.
