Airdrie
United retuned to the top of the under 17 league table today,
level on points with Dundee, after a fine display of football
against a Gretna side that had only been beaten once in their
first six games of the season.
The first half saw Airdrie playing plenty of attacking football
and they were rewarded with a goal in the eleventh minute when
a poor clearence by Gretna allowed Colin Burns to score the first
goal.
Gretna hit back five minutes later after they were awarded a free
kick from the goal line just outside the box and scored at the
near post to draw level at 1-1. Airdrie continued to attack and
were unlucky not to score again, with chances falling to colin
burns from a free kick which brought out a good save by the Gretna
keeper as well as a good shot from Steven McCrannigan, which went
just over the bar.
Mark Fitzpatrick also came close with a shot that went inches
wide of the left-hand up-right. The second half started with substitute
David Taylor coming on for Colin Burns. Airdrie continued to play
well, with some good defending by Steven McMillan at the back.
Mid-way through the half Airdrie were rewarded with a goal from
Martin McAleese. Gretna got a second goal from a free kick and
Airdrie's third was scored by Graeme Fox, making the final score
2-3 in favour of Airdrie.
