Airdrie United got of the bottom of the Scottish First Division
league table with a deserved point against Queen of the South,
a deserved point is probably not quite accurate as Airdrie for
the first time this season deserved to take all three points in
a game we dominated for long periods.
In the end, we were lucky to get a point.
Airdrie United once again started the game at pace and although
there were very few chances during the early stages of the match,
it was obvious who was on top. Stewart Taylor forced Colin Scott
in to making a save as he lobbed the ball in to the far corner
although the shot was easily dealt with by the keeper, it is more
of this the Airdrie fans want to see.
Mid way through the first half, the Graeme Holmes show began to
wind its self up and with a bit of confidence and space the youngster
began to probe away at the Queens defence.
Holmes forced Scott MacKenzie in to making a last ditch tackle
as burst in to the Queens penalty box, Jim Thomson failed to make
a tackle and only MacKenzie Holmes denied a fantastic scoring
opportunity by. The resultant corner gave Airdrie United our first
goal. Stephen McKeown after a scramble in the penalty box belted
the ball in to the back of the net, only to have referee Crawford
Allan blowing for a foul to Queen of the South.
Late in the first half Queen of the South were to get their first
real chance, Marc Smyth sent a poor pass back to Robertson, his
kick rattled off the on rushing Queens attacker Graham Weir, luckily
it bounced out of play and the pressure was off.

Airdrie
United made no changes for the start of the second half and
after Holmes hit the woodwork early on, you could see why nothing
was changed.

However,
early on Sandy was forced to change his back line that had done
fantastically well for the majority of the game. Neil McGowan
was forced to leave the field of play holding is hamstring and
Garry Tierney replaced him.
On the hour mark Sean O'Connor could have opened the goal scoring
for Queens one on one with Robertson, our goalkeeper pulled of
a magnificent save to keep the score line blank.
The irrepressible Brian McPhee finally opens the scoring for Airdrie
United. The Airdrie United striker pounced upon a poor pass back
by Jim Thomson. McPhee from a long way out struck the ball with
the outside of his right foot and watched the ball sale in to
the back of the net. 1 - 0 to Airdrie United.
Airdrie United should have pushed on and killed the game of, instead
we chose to lose our shape and composure and allow Queens to get
back in to the game.
O'Neill made a run through the Airdrie United defence and when
the mid-field failed to pick him up and track back it forced Kevin
Christie in to making a last ditch challenge, with O'Neill already
stumbling it was a surprise to see Crawford Allan giving a penalty.
O'Neill stepped up and made the game 1 -1.
So where do Airdrie Unite go from here, simple we give Queen of
the South a soft free kick on the far side and allow them to take
the lead, Willie Gibson's free kick was bundled over the line
by Henderson.
Still the match was not over; on the 89th minute, a Willie McLaren
free kick was headed home by Garry Tierney to give us our first
point of the season.
