Airdrie
United were treated to a look at the St Mirren and Gus McPherson's
attempts at mind games when they allowed us out on to the park
for a few minutes before the match eventually kicked off.
Arriving at the ground it looked as though there may have been
some doubt as to whether the match would actually go ahead, half
the park was still covered and rumours began that the referee
Underhill still had to make a final decision.
When the game finally did kick off it did not take long for St
Mirren to show their dominance. Time after time St Mirren fired
long diagonal balls through our defence and we were lucky a few
times not to be caught.
That lasted five minutes, then John Sutton made it through the
defence and forced Stephen Robertson to pull off a fantastic save,
with the Airdrie United defence tracking back we were not quick
enough to stop David Van Zanten slotting the ball in to the back
off the net.
The conversation in the terraces switched to the fog! How bad
would it get? should the game be abandoned when the match could
be replayed!
Then it happened, Brian Prunty received the ball on the edge of
the St Mirren box and drove towards goals, Chris Smith in the
St Mirren goal forced Brian to play the ball wide, as he dove
for the ball he also took Brian out and referee Underhill blew
for a penalty.

Stephen
McKeown as per usual stepped up to take the penalty and as is
becoming the norm for him he slotted home for our equaliser.
From then on, it was backs against the wall St Mirren pushed
and battled there way through our defence repeatedly. Half time
could not come quick enough as the Airdrie United defence with
stood the barrage.

The second half Airdrie United came out with all guns blazing
we went for it. There were no real clear cut chances for the Diamonds
but pushed back and fought for everything.
The match was more or less even at this stage, until one moment
of madness led to Stephen Docherty being shown a straight red
card. Airdrie United were given a free kick just outside the St
Mirren penalty box, as Stephen McKeown lined up to hit Docherty
tumbled to the ground clutching his ankle. Referee Underhill saw
nothing wrong and told him to get back up.
Docherty then went back in to the same position and Underhill
unconvinced that anything took place once again went to an un-sighted
position. This time Docherty moved away from the wall clutching
his side instead of leaving it for the ref to deal with he lashed
out.
Straight Red!
We then saw some fantastic saves from Stephen Robertson and defending
that kept us in the game as Airdrie United soaked up twenty seven
minutes of pressure.
