Airdrie
United went in to this match feeling confident, a draw against
St Mirren in mid week and a good performance against Clyde were
all building up to someone getting a hammering but with our
recent performances against Queen of the South not many thought
it would be today.
Queen of the South in recent matches have chosen a defensive
stance in which they have soaked up most of our attacks and
then caught us with a sucker punch with the arrival of Ian McCall
that has all changed. Today they decided that the best form
of defence was to attack and fortunately, this played straight
in to Sandy Stewart and Airdrie United hands.
From the first minute, Airdrie United went on the attack Brian
Prunty and Willie McLaren combined to give Willie a fantastic
strike on goal Colin Scott got down well and turned the ball
round the post for our first corner. With Willie McLaren playing
in an attacking midfield position just behind the front two
we were pressuring Queen of the South at every opportunity.

After ten minutes, Willie McLaren returned
the favour and put Brian Prunty through on goal, Brian hit the
ball with the out side of his left foot and the ball flew sweetly
in to the back of the net.
It wasn't going all our own way Queen of the South were playing
some nice passing play from defence to mid-field the Airdrie
United defence however were up to the challenge and didn't allow
many direct chances on goal.
The combination of McLaren and Prunty paid off once again on
twenty-seven minutes. This time Brian laid the ball across for
Willie to sweep the ball under the out stretched arms of Colin
Scott.
For the remainder of the first half we continued to push for
more goals but it Queen of the South managed to keep us out.
Sandy made no changes at half time and to be honest why should
he, we were comfortable and already worth the entrance fee.

The
second half was going to continue in the same vain; Queen of the
South huffed and puffed but never looked like pushing us. In ten
minutes of suicide defending by Queen of the South, Brian McPhee
would score two and double our lead.
McPhee's first goal came as Brian Prunty hassled the Queens defence
a poor cross-goal pass landed at his feet and he charged forward.
As the Queen of the South defence charged back, a simple lay off
in to the path of Brian McPhee saw him fire the ball under Colin
Scott. Three - nil and it was time for Sandy to make some changes
David Dunn replaced Neil McGowan. Paul Lovering moved from the
wing back position to central defence and David took over as wingback.
After five minutes, Sandy replaced Stephen McKeown and gave the
Airdrie United support our first view of Graeme Holmes. He slotted
in well and helped continue to take the fight to Queens. Finally,
Sandy brought on Stephen McDougall, which allowed Brian Prunty
to leave the park to a standing ovation after an excellent match.
McDougall on the park for only seconds and he supplied Brian McPhee
with our fourth goal of the match a carbon copy of his last strike
saw us finish of the game as easy winners.
