Over
the opening weeks of the season we have had highs and lows, we
have gone in to matches not knowing what to expect. Today's match
against Dundee many fans were confident we would take something,
not many expected the show we were given.
Brian
McPhee set a standard today in fact an Airdrie United record
was set with our first goal scored in sixteen seconds. Brian
Prunty knocked a ball over the Dundee defence and Brian McPhee
headed the ball down and then fired home to beat Soutar. What
a start!
Dundee got there first touch of the ball when they restarted
the match.
In a 4-4-2 formation Airdrie United seemed to match Dundee al
over the park, our mid-field broke down their attack time after
time and our defence were like a fortified wall today nothing
was going to get through. With the noticeable absence of Willie
McLaren and Stephen Docherty who had, both performed well last
week. Steven McDougall and Alan McManus (suspended last week)
came back in and never put a foot wrong. McDougall when he has
played has been a revelation going forward and today was going
to be no different. Does sublime cover it when he is on the
ball?
Brian opened his goal scoring record for Airdrie United against
Dundee in the Bells Challenge Cup 1-1 draw, his first goal in
the league scored after sixteen second today and his second
scored on 26 minutes. Brian Prunty had forced Soutar in the
Dundee goalmouth to pull of a good save after he shot from outside
the penalty box. The corner taken by McDougall, fell to Allan
McManus his chip back in to the box gave McPhee his second goal
as he rose above the Dundee defence and nodded the ball home.
A two - nil score line and not even a quarter of the game gone.
The first half ended with Airdrie United well in charge and
leaving Dundee with a record of one-corner, two-yellow cards
and zero shots on target.

There
were no changes made at half time so the match continued as
the first half had finished. Airdrie United in control of the
ball but not really forcing the issue our build up play seemed
to be quicker today as we went from defence to attack putting
constant pressure on the already frail Dundee defence. Stephen
McDougal on the left took every opportunity to run at the Dundee
defence. Once again, McDougal was very unlucky not to open his
account with the club and yet again forced Dundee's best player
Soutar to pull off stop after stop.
I
feel Paul Lovering should also get a mention here, after his
broken ribs at the beginning of the season and then a suspected
broken foot Lovering was back to his usual self up and down
the wing looking a lot fitter than we have seen him this season.

Airdrie
United were dominating all over the park but on seventy three
minutes Dundee made the break through, they actually had a shot
on goal, nothing spectacular and Robertson had it covered but
a shots a shot.
Brian Prunty had left the park complaining of a hamstring pull,
Stephen Docherty moved in to mid-field and Martin Hardie moved
in to the forward position.
Our third goal came when Brian McPhee put in a cross from the
right hand side; Mann slipped and put up his hand to block the
ball, a deliberate handball in the penalty box that went strangely
unpunished. Resident penalty taker Stephen McKeown steps up and
makes it three - nil.
McPhee was not finished there, as he set Martin Hardie up with
his first of the season. A simple pinpoint defence-splitting ball
left Hardie too simply slip the ball underneath the out stretched
Dundee goalkeeper.
