Hamilton came to the Excelsior stadium hoping to
turn around their fortunes and take away a victory after the were
defeated last week by St Mirren fortunately for Airdrie United
it was not to be.
Airdrie United began the game quickly and went on the offensive
from the start. Brian Prunty and Brian McPhee were combining well
up front and everything looked encouraging.
Stephen McDougal, in the opening minutes sent in two corners that
were not cleared properly by the Hamilton defence, after the second
youngster Stephen McKenna had a chance to open the scoring but
his shot rose over the bar.
Billy Reid had read the match report from our previous meeting
and opted to go for the aerial bombardment early instead of relying
on it late on.
Early in to the game Brian Prunty had a good shooting opportunity
that saw the ball spin by the far post.
Minutes later it was once again Brian McPhee and Brian Prunty
combining to set Kevin Barkey up with the best chance of the match
so far, unfortunately his powder puff back pass went straight
in to the arms of keeper McEwan.
However, Brian McPhee would bring us to life. A poor clearance
from the Hamilton defence saw the ball drop for Brian, a slip,
tumble, and stagger some poor tackling from Hamilton and then
a beautifully placed shot saw the ball curl inside the far post
a fantastic strike saw Airdrie United take the lead on 28 minutes.
Hamilton tried to fight back through Carrigan, his long-range
shot, that may have been deflected, hit upright before bouncing
out of play.
Airdrie United dominated the remainder of the first half and with
the game becoming more and more heated yellow cards began to fly.
The half ended with Airdrie United well in control.

As the second half began disaster
struck as the Airdrie United, defence fell to pieces. A Derek
Fleming corner wasn't cleared leaving Carrigan once again to
fire the ball across the face of goal with no one marking John
Robertson at the back post it was an easy equaliser. Twelve
minutes later Billy Reid decides the long ball approach has
failed and opts for a more subtle tactic, wee guys with pace.
Gihaney and McMullan replaced Keogh and Carrigan and it paid
dividends. Within second of them joining the field of play Hamilton
were two - one up. Paul McMullan sent in a cross that once again
found a Hamilton player un-marked Brown Ferguson put his head
behind the ball and it looked as though the fight back was complete
and it was game over.
|
Yet
still Sandy Stewart had a few aces left in his arsenal. Stephen
Docherty replaced Martin Hardie straight after the goal and a
few minutes later Willie McLaren replaced Kevin Barkey. Billy
Reid and Hamilton must see Willie McLaren as the thorn in their
side in our last meeting, Willie scored the opening goal at New
Douglas Park and earns us a draw, this time it would be Willie
to close the show. On the eighty-ninth minute McLaren finds himself
free in the Hamilton penalty box with only one thing to do, fire
the ball in to the net, he does it and the Airdrie United support
leave happy with a point. |
