Both
Airdrie United and Hamilton had chances to win this game; dominating
the first, half was not enough to give Airdrie United the three
points.
Airdrie United took a while to settle in to the match but when
we did, we took control and dominated. In the opening 10-15 minutes
chances from McKenna (rebounded of the cross bar) Prunty and Twigg
had chances to put Airdrie United in the lead but David McEwan
kept his cool and kept the score line at nil-nil.
Willie McLaren on the left as normal beat McKenzie for pace. If
his confidence was just a bit higher we could have seen him hammering
home goals early on, freed at least three times his pace left
him with opportunities and instead of a direct shot at goal, he
choose to cross the ball and the chance went by the way.
Willie McLaren's third chance saw him score a class goal and give
us our more than justified lead. A direct run at goal from the
wing saw Willie left plenty of time to fire the ball low past
McEwan thirty minutes on the clock and Airdrie United were more
than comfortable.

Two
minutes after the match restarted Gary Twigg should have made
it two - nil, in a similar position to Willie McLaren this time
on the right Twigg tried to emulate the same move as McLaren,
if his shot was just a little bit harder it may have beat McEwan.
Towards the end of the second half, Hamilton had a chance to
level the match; Brian Carrigan received the ball in a good
position on the right wing and fired in a cross that was headed
against the foot of the post by Graeme Jones. The ball was cleared
for a corner. Kevin Barkey on the front post was to become the
hero of the moment. Brian Carrigan fired in the corner kick,
which was a headed goal ward by Mark McLaughlin, only for Kevin
Barkey too illustrate the importance of having a man remain
on the front post until the ball is cleared. Heading the ball
clear he helped keep the first half winning score line.

The
second half would be thrown on its head by the arrival of Pat
Keogh on the park for Hamilton. The home team switched from trying
to play football to route one. The Hamilton mid-field was by passed
and every ball was fired over the top. The game that had not seen
any of the local Derby bite suddenly took on a different tone.
Hamilton began to bite, scratch, pull and push their way around
the Airdrie United defence and referee Stuart Dougal chose to
ignore anything other than the most blatant of attempts at the
ball.
Hamilton really began to bully their way throw the remainder of
the match, which in turn forced the Airdrie defence to pull out
all the stops. Lee Hollis was forced to pull off several saves
before Hamilton finally managed to make the break through. A cross-fired
in to Pat Keogh (surprise-surprise) saw Lee Hollis pulling of
a fantastic save, the ball unfortunately fell to Scott MacKenzie
who fired home at close range.
Airdrie United were not totally out of the game and Brian Prunty
was in the right position at the right time to fire in a shot.
Unfortunately, his shot was straight at David McEwan who saved
easily.
The remainder of the match was no more than a defensive scrap,
Hamilton chose not to play football but instead to force there
way in to the goal. We held on and came away from New Douglas
Park with a point that kept our un-beaten run in tact.
