Tired
legs, New Year's hangover over or Billy Reid tactical genius killed
this match from start to finish.
The first match of 2006 had the potential to be a good match Airdrie
United were on a good run and playing football, Hamilton had been
described n recent weeks as having the worst game of the season
a nil - nil draw with Dundee.
Airdrie United started the brightest and in the opening ten minutes,
Brian Prunty spun a header by the near post. It was all Airdrie
United but we just lacked the killer touch. A few minutes later
it was Brian McPhee rising above the Hamilton defence with a header
that never trouble McEwan in the Hamilton goal.
Our last chance in the first half fell to Brian Prunty once again,
another header that this time flew by the far post.
Then with twenty five minutes gone Hamilton hit us with a sucker
punch, a corner from the near side, sent in by Derek Fleming's,
was headed home by Mark McLaughlin it was their only chance of
the match so far and would prove to be Hamilton's only shot on
goal for the remainder of the game.
It takes a strong referee to stand up to Billy Reid's following
tactics and unfortunately in Mike McCurry we had nothing like
a strong referee.
Every Airdrie United move fell apart from here on in, every time
McLaren or McDougal went on a run it was brought to an abrupt
halt, foul after foul was given away by Hamilton and still McCurry
made no move to book a Hamilton player.
The remainder of the half ran out this way and we went in loosing
one - nil. |

Over
the past few weeks Airdrie United have came out of the changing
rooms at half time full of life with a determination, Sandy
Stewart's half time talks seemed to be bringing the players
back to life would it work today?
Unfortunately, it was not to be!

We
had a few opportunities in the second half, Willie McLaren was
one on one with the last man and chose to pass rather than run
at the defence.
Martin Hardie was brought on to replace Steven McDougall and had
a shot saved at the near post. Billy Reid's tactics were working
Hamilton killed of the game at every single opportunity and Airdrie
United were running out of ideas.
The only other talking point of the game came when substitute
Lewis Coult arrived on the scene, not only was he booked for his
first tackle of the match, he was also stretchered off with only
a few minutes to go.
