We
began this game hoping to increase our point's difference over
the clubs below us that would of course mean winning and the results
against other teams going our way.
Martin
Hardie began this match up front replacing the suspended Brian
McPhee, after the SFA retracted his sending of against Stranraer.
David Dunn came in to play on the left hand side, Steven McDougall
came on in the right and side and this allowed Sandy to develop
a 4-4-2 system.
Brechin City began the match strongly and did not allow us to
develop our passing game. They fought against everything we
threw against them, the near sideline man also took his chances
to thwart our advances, and several times, we broke the offside
trap only to have the lines man disagree.
It took us twenty-seven minutes to break down the Brechin defence,
Willie McLaren and Brian Prunty combined in front of the Penalty
box, Brian then pulled away from the centre circle, with his
back to the goals spun, and fired the ball passed Airdrie lad
Craig Neilson in the Brechin goal.
The remainder of the half was still pretty even and it looked
as though this game could go either way as the first half ended.

The three goal scorers
|
What
happened in the changing room at half time is any ones guess
but the second half was about to come to life.
Steven McDougal brought the second half to life with a bang,
his charge in to the Brechin box straight after the break resulted
in us getting a corner. Willie McLaren fired the corner to the
far post and once again found Prunty, again with his back to
goal he spun and fired and hammered the ball in to the back
of the net.
Brechin from then on, fell apart.
|
It took it's time but when It began Airdrie United were devastating.
Every play and goal came through McLaren, Prunty or McDougal.
Goals continued to flow, with McDougall setting up Hardie, who
scored at the second attempt.
Hardie then got no. 4 in spectacular fashion from the game's best
move. Sub Holmes, just on for Dunn, won the ball in midfield,
drove forward, played a defence-splitting pass to McLaren who
then squared for Hardie to turn the ball home. McLaren then got
in on the scoring from a Prunty cross to the back post his header
only had direction straight in to the back of the net
Then McLaren turned provider by hitting one in for Hardie minutes
from the end giving him his third and first ever heart trick in
professional football.
