Airdrie United (2) Vs. (0) Queen of the South
On a sodden pitch Airdrie United climbed to fifth in the league after defeating a very well organised Queen of the South team. When a team beats you three times in a season without even a goal to show for your own progress and play, football Voodoo seems to take over and you begin to think that nothing in this world will enable you to put that ghost to rest. Tonight on a pitch that held up very well considering the down pour, the players had to suffer. Airdrie United finally dispatched Queen of the South and apart from a few scary moments we did it comfortably. Both teams struggled to find their footing on the slippy ground during the first moments of the match. The first ten or twenty minutes, was spent getting used to how the ball was holding up on the ground. Most of the Airdrie United play was developing down the left hand wing combinations between Willie McLaren, Alan Gow and Martin Hardie were begin to open holes in the Queens defence. Both teams were trying to play football with the ball on the ground and it took until the 31st minute for the game to open up. During one of these forays Willie McLaren cut the ball back to Alan Gow, Alan's long searching ball in to the box went straight to Owen Coyle's head, from close range Owen put Airdrie United 1-0 up. Queen of the South kept up the pressure straight after the restart and Brian McLaughlin came close to equalising three minutes later, his shot spinning by the post. The next chance again fell to Brian McLaughlin and Queen of the South but once again the opportunity was missed. On the slippy surface some rash tackles were being made and Willie McLaren running down the near side was brought clattering to the ground on more than one occasion. Airdrie United took a 1-0 lead in to the changing rooms at half time. You could see in the second half that the players on both sides were beginning to get tired, their legs were heavy and trying to fight for every ball was beginning to sap any energy left. Gaps were beginning to appear in both defences; players were now getting caught out of position and yet neither team could find an opening. It was Alan Gow who was going to secure the three points for the Diamonds with his fourth goal of the season. Collecting the ball just inside of the Queen of the South half Alan went on a mazy run at our opponents defence. With Willie McLaren open on the far side and Owen Coyle in space on the right Alan sent a curling left foot shot by the defending keeper that tucked just inside the far goal post and put Airdrie United 2-0 up. 61 minutes on the clock and Airdrie United were looking comfortable. Both teams had chances towards the end of the game and a mix up in the Airdrie United goal mouth that earlier in the season, could have led to an opposition goal, was eventually cleared. The game finished with Queen of the South still trying to find an opening, we secured our fourth shut out of the season and a decent 2-0 win. The game finished Airdrie United (2) Vs.
