Ross County (1) v Airdrie United (2)
Bells Scottish 1st Division
20th November 2004
Victoria Park
What a difference a fortnight can make to the fortunes of a football
club, languishing in eighth place for most of the season two victories
on the bounce and we are sitting joint 5th in the Bells Scottish First
Division.
On a very cold day in Dingwall, some estimate the temperature to have
dropped to -6 during the game, Airdrie United took the field for a match
that looked as if it was very luck to have gone ahead. The firm ground
suited our play keeping the ball on the ground, our passing game soon
began to pay dividends. We had possession of the ball for the majority
of the half but breaking down the Ross County defence was proving harder
than first thought. The break through came on 16 minutes, Owen Coyle
as usual found himself in the penalty box, as he rose to attack the
ball he was shoved in the back and his arm made contact with the ball,
it landed perfectly for Martin Hardie to rush in and fire home his first
goal for the Diamonds, it was a scrappy one but for a change we had
a little bit of luck.
But luck in this game is very fickle and we should have capitalised
on our possession before Ross County in a sweeping attack managed to
equalise. Another Airdrie United attack broke down on the Ross County
defence and a quick counter attack from Robbie Winters opened up our
defence. A long cross field ball should have been dealt with by Stephen
Docherty, but his sliced clearance spun in to the back of the net for
Airdrie United third own goal of the season. Four minutes before half
time is the perfect time to score especially when you have been under
a lot of pressure to first half ended 1 Vs 1.
Airdrie United came out for the second half on fire, we basically laid
siege to the Ross County goal mouth and I can't remember our opponents
having any real chances in the second half until late on. The combination
of Willie McLaren runs down the wing, Alan Gow ball control, who even
when it seemed he had lost the ball still came away with it, the ever
present Owen Coyle and the determination of Marvyn Wilson and Martin
Hardie in mid-field meant eventually our chance to claim all three points
would come.
Our first real opportunity came half way through the second half, Owen
Coyle from where I was sitting only had to hit the ball on target and
we would have been 2 Vs. 1 up, but instead the ball spun by the near
post. It was estimated that Airdrie United had 14 corners, in the game
most of which came in a ten minute spell in the second half. Ball after
ball was fired in to the Ross County goal mouth by Willie McLaren on
the near side, the fans giving him support every time he hit the ball
and it was with the fourteenth and final corner of the game for us that
the second goal was scored. We had reached the stage where even with
all the pressure we had begun to accept that the game was going to end
in a draw. Then the inevitable happened - Willie McLaren swung a final
corner in to the box and our left back Paul Lovering rose up to head
the ball in to the Ross County goal. It was backs to the wall then for
the last three minutes. Owen Coyle was replaced by David Dunn to shore
up the midfield in a tactical substitution but still Ross County threw
everything at us. Lee Hollis proved his worth between the posts; a close
range shot from a corner was superbly parried and then cleared of the
line by Mark Roberts. As the ball bounced in to the midfield the referee
blew for full time and Airdrie United celebrated our second victory
in two weeks.
The game finished Ross County (1) Vs. (2) Airdrie United
