Partick Thistle (3)
vs. Airdrie United (2) Bells Scottish 1st Division
14th August 2004
Firhill Stadium
Two goals from Owen Coyle could not prevent Airdrie United losing our
first game on the road of season 2004/2005.
This was always going to be a difficult game but the start we had was
impressive, we had no fear of the team that had just been relegated
from the SPL and through our veteran Owen Coyle it wasn't long until
Airdrie United were up 1-0. Unusual for Owen it was his head that supplied
the goal after Mark Roberts supplied a pin point cross 1-0 to Airdrie
and we were only 19 minutes in to the game. However, Partick were not
going to lie down and Juan Escalas, a Spanish striker, equalised again
with the head on 34 minutes. This had all the making of a classic game
of football and the second half was going to be no different.
Partick Thistle came out of the blocks in the second half faster and
sharper and within 8 minutes of the restart Leigh Hinds, ex-Aberdeen
and Clyde, had put the home side in front. But that wasn't to be the
end of the game. Attack, attack, attack seemed to be the philosophy
of the game and once again Owen Coyle saved the Diamonds with his second
goal of the game on 67 minutes. Unfortunately the Airdrie United defence
couldn't hold on to the lead and a goal mouth scramble allowed Partick
Thistles Jamie Mitchell to slot home the third and winning goal for
Partick. Owen Coyle didn't look happy as he led the team back to the
centre circle for the re-start. Both teams had chances to score in the
last 20 minutes but most of the pressure was going against Airdrie who
were now pinned back within our own half.
The game finished Partick Thistle (3) Vs. Airdrie United (2).
