Airdrie
United Football Club
Clyde (1) Vs. (0) Airdrie United Airdrie United pounded the Clyde goalmouth but were left with nothing to show for it. Three games in six days didn't slow the Airdrie United team down - our fitness was good but our lack of direct attacking play cost us a game that was there for the taking. We began the game with the same team that had comfortably beaten Queen of the South earlier in the week. Clyde set their stall out early and that basically was to keep us out. Billy Reid must have done his home work while at Wednesday nights game because Clyde stopped all our running play early on, we found positions down the left hand side but seemed to be very one sided. Clyde only really managed one real attack in the first half and Mark McGeown pulled of a fantastic double save to keep the score 0-0 at half time. It looked like it would take a mistake on either side to settle this fixture. Airdrie
United came out fighting in the second half and decent chances for Gow,
McLaren, Coyle and Docherty all went begging. Finally the break through
came but unfortunately it was to go Clyde's way. As Airdrie were trying
to attack once again we were caught with a sucker punch. A cross ball
from Gilhaney caught us in the middle of the park, his pass found new
recruit Graeme Jones in space and he didn't waste the opportunity to
fire home the only goal of the game. We didn't stop attacking and towards
the end of the game it looked as though the three games in six days
were finally beginning to take its toll. We kept pushing and Clyde kept
shutting up shop in a game that was just not going to go Airdrie United's
way. Attendance:
- 1513
