A superb start to the game by Airdrie with 2 goals inside the 1st 4 minutes proved to little to secure the 3 points.  David Nixon got the Diamonds off to the best possible start with a goal from close in inside the 2nd minute.  John Baird then doubled the advantage 2 minutes later with a low drive beyond Morton keeper Stewart.

Airdrie had further chances to put the game beyond Morton but with the end of the half approaching Morton pulled a goal back when a cross into the box was met by McGuffie.  On the stroke of half time Morton scored a 2nd.  Poor defending allowed the ball to break to Brian Wake and his turn and shot levelled the game.

With less than 10 minutes of the 2nd half gone bad defending allowed Wake to double his tally and put Morton in front.  After a great start Airdrie were now chasing the game but it was Morton who scored next when a great strike by David Van Zantan made it 4-2.  Airdrie then brought on Keegan and Watt in an attempt to get back into the game, Morton however held on to secure the 3 points.
