Both
Dundee and Airdrie United began this match in a four-four- two
formation which in the early moment of the game more or less cancelled
one another out. Sandy Stewart had decided to begin the game with
the same starting eleven that had won so convincingly against
Brechin last week.
Both teams fought for the break through and it took Dundee twenty
minutes to open the scoring.
Craig O'Reilly made a run across the face of the Airdrie United
box his turn and shot trickled in to the back of the net. Dundee
were one nil up in what was an even match so far.
Airdrie United were neither in this match nor out of it, could
some good crosses left us with only needing a little bit of luck
and composure in front of goal have made all the difference. Dundee
looked like they would be going in at half time one nil up.
Then in last minute of the first half disaster struck as Alan
McManus gave away a free kick in front of the penalty box. With
the last kick of the half Bobby Mann sent the ball in to the back
of the net to give Dundee a two nil lead.

Last
weeks half time talk resulted in us getting five goals would
Sandy be able to change our fortunes once again and bring us
the result we needed. Losing the game two nil would have been
an injustice as neither team had done enough to deserve such
a result.
The
second half was to develop in to the Prunty and McPhee show,
but not before David Dunn was replaced by Graham Holmes.
Airdrie United dragged themselves back in to the game after
quarter of an hour. A cross from Willie McLaren on the left
was turned back across goal by MacDougall for Prunty to turn
the ball past Jack.

The
game then went back to a stalemate, Airdrie United through Hardie
and Prunty pushed and pushed, Willie McLaren had a chance on the
edge of the box that he fired by the far post. The breakthrough
that would give Airdrie United the draw we deserved would just
not come.
After twenty-five minutes, Sandy made the change that would change
the face of the game. Brian McPhee replaced a very disappointed
Martin Hardie whose passion may have just crossed the line.
So it was up to McPhee to show what he could do and almost from
his first touch of the ball he looked determined to bring this
game to a conclusion in our favour.
Five minutes on the park and McPhee hit a beautiful shot; thirty-five
yards out, he struck a shot so sweet that it had Jack in the Dundee
goalmouth beat before it left his boot, unfortunately the cross
bar got in the way and the ball bounced out of play.
After a shot like that stays out the fans begin to think that
today is just not going to be our day.
But as is mentioned above McPhee looked determined that this game
would not end in Dundee's favour. Minutes from the end Airdrie
United finally made the breakthrough that would save us. Brian
McPhee beat Dixon down the right flank and fought his way be Mann,
under heavy challenges he managed to squeeze the ball across goal
for Prunty to knock the ball home and give us what we thought
would be a deserved point.
Game over and the Airdrie United fans are happy to take the point
from a game we looked destined to lose. However, as Dundee restart
the match Prunty shows just how determined and focussed he is,
in the dying seconds of the game he hits a shot across the face
of the goal that trickles it's way past Jack and gives Airdrie
United six points and leap frogs us above our hosts.
The Airdrie United fans content to accept a draw are now euphoric
in a win and three points. |
