Airdrie United (1) vs. Raith Rovers (1)
Bells Scottish 1st Division
21st August 2004
New Broomfield

Airdrie United came out on the attack and very quickly it looked like, we were on the score sheet but it was one of those "how did that stay out?" situation. Stephen McKeown hit a header on to the Raith cross bar after Mark Roberts sent in a cross. Next up was Jerome Vareille who fired a shot in that curled round the post and then the game was turned on its head.
Untroubled so far, some poor communication between goal keeper Mark McGeown and Neil McGowan led to the first goal. Joe McAlpine sent in what should have been an easily disposed of cross, neither Mark nor Neil collected it properly, but in crept Hamed Sacko to score the Raith goal. For the remainder of the half we huffed and puffed but where a goal was going to come from, it was hard to see.

The second half saw us starting on the offensive but we still couldn't penetrate the Raith Rovers defence, it looked more and more likely that Airdrie were due our first home defeat of the league season. It was time for players to stand up and be counted and up stepped Stephen McKeown and Marvyn Wilson, with the defence reverting to punting the ball up the park to Raith Rovers 6ft plus defenders, it fell to Marvyn and Stephen to play the ball on the ground. Our first substitution came when Stephen Docherty was brought on for Willie Wilson in the right back position, this gave us another attacking route, pushing up, Stephen made the Raith midfielder at least chase back in to there own half.
Our goal came from man of the match Stephen McKeown, he harried the Raith keeper in to committing himself for the ball, he then charged in between two players and with Raith defenders standing on the line he chipped the ball in to the back of the net. A few minutes later it was Stephen again who had the Airdrie United fans on our feet, a short run across the face of the box he turned and fired a powerful shot that looked destined for the back of the net, but the Raith keeper Bethalot pulled off a fantastic save which kept the score at one a piece. Our next chance fell to Paul Lovering a flying header that cracked the cross bar and left Paul on the ground for a few minutes getting attention from the physio. Raith had a few chances as well, once or twice Mark McGeown was left one on one with on coming strikers and managed to keep us in the game.
