Airdrie United fell to their third defeat to Queen of the South this season in another game of missed opportunities.
As in most of our games this season, we maintained the majority of possession, but there didn't seem to be enough link up play between the mid-field and forwards and always seemed to opt for the long ball in to Owen Coyle and Stephen McKeown, and against defender the height of Queen of the South's it was never going to do any good. Our best play and our only chance of the first half came from a combination of passing play between Owen Coyle and Willie McLaren. If Willie McLaren managed to lift the ball over Colin Scott the first half would not have ended 0-0.
The second half very quickly began to take the same shape as the first. Airdrie United in possession. Queen of the South closing us down very quickly and our defence opting to play direct football. We should have been passing the ball through the middle of the park but with our over the top play we were making Marvyn Wilson and Martin Hardie nothing more than blockers. It took 53 minutes for the dead lock to be broken and unfortunately in wasn't in Airdrie United favour. David McNiven brought the ball down for Steve Bowey to slot home the only goal of the game. Airdrie United didn't stop fighting but it wasn't meant to be, once again the ball was laid on a plate for Willie McLaren just to lift the ball and slot home but again Colin Scott went the correct way and nothing came of it. Rookie goal keeper Lee Hollis was also called in to action more as we pushed up field, but he was up to the job and kept the score at 1-0. Late on in the second half both Martin Hardie and Owen Coyle came close to scoring as Airdrie United camped themselves on the Queen of the South half but nothing came of our chances.
