Airdrie United (4)

Bells Scottish 1st Division
16th October 2004
New Broomfield
Airdrie United got themselves back on the winning trail
with a win over local rivals Partick Thistle.
The week off, due to the International matches, allowed Sandy to bring
back several players that were on the fringes of being at full fitness.
Airdrie began the first half in control and it was not long before we
were on the score sheet. Marvyn Wilson received the ball out side the
Partick box and his powerful shot flew in to the back of the net. 20
minutes on the clock and Airdrie United were 1 - 0 and looking comfortable.
Martin Hardie was unlucky not to score on the 38th minute his shot rattling
off the post but it fell to the man Partick Thistle love to hate, Owen
Coyle, who with an easy tap in made the score 2 - 0. Martin Hardie was
booked shortly afterwards as a sliding tackle went over the ball and
he collided with Partick Thistles Andy Dowie. Although not confirmed
Andy Dowie was taken to hospital with a suspected broken leg and we
wish him all the best on his road to recovery. The half finished as
Partick managed to pull a goal back when Madaschi was allowed a free
header from a corner.
Partick Thistle came out in the second half as though they were going
to be up for the game, so much so they were out on the park five minutes
before the game was due to restart. It was an even start to the second
half with both teams trying to break the other down and find the back
of the net.
In a minute of madness the game was turned on its head. 51 minutes gone
and Grant Murray went in to a tackle against Martin Hardie, the tackle
was two footed and with the referee right on the spot it should have
been dealt with then and there. But Kevin Christie ran up the park as
things erupted in the centre circle. As referee Alan Freeman tried to
calm the situation down Partick player Andy Wilkinson shoved him. The
result Murray and Wilkinson red carded and Christie shown a yellow.
With his first start this season, after recovering from a head injury,
it was Willie McLaren who put Airdrie United further in front on 58
minutes and it looked like Airdrie United were going to notch up a few
more goals. Two men down you would have thought that would have been
game over but no, Partick seemed to play better as a nine man unit than
they had in the previous half. Some sloppy defending allowed Partick
to get back in to the game and Escalas brought the goal deficit back
to one goal. Mark McGeown pulled off a few fantastic saves to keep the
score line 3 - 2 but it was Owen Coyle who finished off the game scoring
on the 83rd minute.
The game finished Airdrie United (4) Vs. (2) Partick Thistle.
