In a fantastic match both teams had their chances to win this game but thanks the Owen Coyle the Diamonds march on.
Airdrie United came in to this match full of confidence having won our last three games, but we were up against St Mirren who had only lost 1 of their previous matches in the Bells First Division, it would take supreme effort to get a result form this game and in the end we got it. The game started slowly with St Mirren having the most possession and slowly feeling their way through the Airdrie United defence but unable to make that final break through. St Mirren's first real chance, a shot from Murray spun wide past Lee Hollis post. Airdrie United gave St Mirren twenty minutes to blow themselves out and then Alan Gow and Coyle went on the prowl. If it wasn't for a fine save from Craig Hinchcliffe, Owen Coyle would have opened the scoring after 20 minutes but it took until the thirty second minute for the dead lock to be broken. Alan Gow surrounded by at least three St Mirren players lifted the ball in to the path of Owen Coyle who slammed home his eleventh goal of the season.
St Mirren stepped up a gear determined to score at least an equaliser but it wasn't to be. Some last ditch defending by Stephen Docherty saved Airdrie United for most of the second half but also resulted in him getting a booking. The Airdrie United fans were in sensed when a cross field ball found Willie McLaren in space, a very late flag by the near side linesman chopped off Owen Coyle's twelfth goal. We hung in well, until St Mirren was awarded a free kick just outside the Airdrie United penalty box. Ricky Gilles stepped up to take the free kick, Lee Hollis seemed to have the shot well covered and the Airdrie United fans were surprised to see the ball roll from between his legs and cross the goal line. It's one of those mistakes fans usually use to berate players but instead of the usual howls for blood from the Airdrie United support Lee has been given nothing but support, a mistake that we hope will be the making of our young goal keeper. The first half ended one all in what was proving to be a very good game. I would like to take the time to show Craig Hinchcliffe some respect here, as the teams were heading down the tunnel at half time he spoke some words of encouragement to Lee Hollis not bad for an opposition player.
The second half was fantastic; within minutes of the kick off Martin Hardie saw Craig Hinchcliffe pull off another fantastic save from his bullet header. Slowly but surely Airdrie United were beginning to control every inch of the park, our defence were keeping the St Mirren attack away from Hollis. Our midfield were breaking up play and help with swift attacks through McLaren, Coyle and Gow and yet we couldn't find the net. Then as become the norm for this season, the travesty that allowed St Mirren to score took place. Airdrie United (1) Vs. (2) St Mirren totally against the run of play.
Was it time for the flood gates to open and St Mirren to charge forward and score more? Not against this Airdrie United team it's not. Within two minutes of the restart, Alan Gow was unfortunate to see a powerful shot palmed away by Craig Hinchcliffe, that's at least three decent chances the St Mirren has kept out so far, but the ball fell nicely to the attacking Martin Hardie who hammered in the Airdrie United second goal, two all and the game was back on. It was all Airdrie United from there on in, but it was going to be Craig Hinchcliffe who kept us at bay and kept the score to a respectable level. With Owen Coyle getting left in space as St Mirren double teamed Alan Gow at every opportunity, eventually Owen was to score his twelfth goal of the season. Coyle out side the penalty box spun on to his right foot fire a precise shot in to the far top corner of the St Mirren goal, but as the Airdrie United rose to their feet in celebration that man Hinchcliffe pulled out all the stops and in a acrobatic display kept the score level. Five minutes later and in virtually the exact same position Coyle changed tact, this time his shot was low but to the same corner again Craig Hinchcliffe pulled out all the stops to attempt the save but the ball crept over the line after coming off the post. In a game that went one way then the other and after minutes over injury time that came from no where Airdrie United won the game 3 Vs. 2.
