Airdrie United (3) vs. East Fife (0) CIS Cup first round
10th August 2004
New Broomfield
We met East Fife in the CIS
Cup last season and it was an away game which we won 2-0, Mark Roberts
and Paul Ronald both scored to give us the victory.
The game kicked off in the monsoon weather that has been covering Scotland
for the past three days and it was going to be a tough night for everyone
involved in the game.
After playing each other five times last season, Airdrie United and
East Fife were bound to know each other very well. But it was Airdrie
United who struck first. Alan Gow and Owen Coyle combined to put the
East Fife keeper John Dodds under pressure Owens shot was saved but
the ball fell in to the path of Jerome Varielle who slotted home for
his second goal of the season. Our second goal was again from the Gow-
Coyle combination, Alan Gow provided the cross and Owen Coyle supplied
his head and goal number two on the stroke of half time.
It wasn't all one way traffic though and East Fife could have scored
through some poor defending inside the box, fortunately the ball was
fired off the post and eventually cleared. Our third and final goal
came from Mark Roberts, from the penalty spot. Paul Lovering had made
a run in to East Fife box and the referee judged he was brought down
by Craig Condie. Mark Roberts made no mistake with the penalty and Airdrie
United won the game 3-0.
Some other things to note, Alan Gow did not come out for the second
half, Mark Roberts hobbled off with about 10 minutes to go leaving us
with only 10 men on the park and David Dunn went off looking as if he
was in serious pain.
